Tips For New Credit Card Holders
2008
Getting a credit card is an exciting time. Being able to purchase something and pay for it later can help when one is low on money. But credit cards are not for people who will abuse them. Too often, people use their credit cards the wrong way. They have trouble paying the money back every month. This can lead to not having enough money for other bills such as rent and a car payment. After awhile, a person isn’t spending money on their credit cards anymore; they are using all their money paying them off.
Learning how to use a credit card is important. New credit card holders should be aware and spend wisely. Never spend more than 60% of what the limit on the card is. This will leave enough room for emergencies and keep the monthly payments low. This will also look good on a credit report. Credit reports are used to grant new loans and credit cards to people when they apply for them. Having a bad credit report will ensure higher interest rates on loans or not being able to get the loan at all.
Having credit cards will actually help one’s credit card at first. As long as a person pays off the card every month, one’s credit rating will remain high. Once a person charges too much and begins accumulating interest, one’s credit rating will slip a little. After missing a few payments, one’s credit rating will drop a lot. Having a credit card comes with a lot of responsibility.
When applying for a credit card, find one with a low interest rate. This will keep monthly payments down. Use the card and pay it off each month. This will keep interest charges from being applied. This can save lots of money down the road. Don’t ask for a credit line increase. If a person uses the card responsibly and makes regular payments, the credit line will increase. Asking for a higher credit line will actually make one’s credit rating go down. Just because the credit line goes up does not mean a person should spend more money. Spend wisely, so that debt is accumulated later.
Start with one credit card. When a person gets a better job or graduates from college, then decide whether another card is needed. If it is not needed, then do not apply for anymore. Having one card will stop a person from spending too much money. A credit card is a great thing to have in case of an emergency. Abusing the card will merely lead to trouble.
